Uses: The drug Picrorhiza is obtained from the dried rhizomes and roots which is used as a substitute or adulterant of Indian Gentian-Gentiana kurroo Royle and is having bitter tonic almost as efficacious as gentian; also considered of having cholagogue and stomachic; in large doses it is cathartic and in small doses it acts as laxative. It is beneficial in dropsy. The plant contains kutkin, picrorhizin, and other compounds.
